Muffaletta (pronounced moo-fuh-let-ta) is an Italian sandwich that begins with a round bread. I like sourdough for its chewy texture. A classic Muffaletta has these five ingredients: chopped olive salad, ham or prosciutto, genoa salami, mortadella and provolone cheese. All thinly sliced and layered for a delicious lunch or light dinner. This sandwich travels well and is perfect for a picnic or long trip.
- 1 12-16 ounce round bread8 slices salami
- 8 slices prosciutto/ham
- 8 slices mortadella
- 8 slices mozzarella cheese
- 8 slices provolone cheese
- 2 roasted red peppers (optional)
- 1 jar chopped olive salad
Slice the loaf in half and hollow out the bread Spread one half with the olive salad mix. Now start to layer the meat and cheese and top with the roasted peppers or more olive salad. Top with the other half of the bread and wrap the loaf with plastic wrap and top with a heavy item like a brick and leave in the fridge overnight.
When ready to serve cut in pieces like a cake and enjoy!
